 The receptionist relayed the message that Mr. Ramsey had called in to say that his new Border collie puppy, Sam, was not doing well, and he needed to bring him in as soon as possible.
 The x-rays revealed the classic signs of blockage where the barium stopped in the large intestine and would not move past the large barrier. The mass appeared to take up the entire back half of the dog. My first thought, after examining the radiographs, was that I was just glad they weren't of my abdomen.  It was hard to see Thomas leave the clinic in tears and alone. He placed the empty cat carrier into the back seat of his Honda Civic and pulled away. The rest of that day none of us was too cheery. The loss of Andre had left us all a little depressed, and we could visualize Thomas sitting alone in his house that evening.
 It was almost closing time and getting dark when my boss called in after finishing a horse call. He had found two tiny kittens at the intersection of two gravel roads on his way home. The fate of their mother was unknown, but they were hungry and cold. He had scooped them up and was bringing them into the clinic for the night.
